Cross Country Skiing

Explore the numerous cross-country skiing trails in the Roaring Fork Valley. The altitude guarantees great snow conditions for variety of beautiful trails. During the winter, there are nordic specific trails that are groomed when the conditions are right.

    McClure Pass

    Another backcountry option is McClure Pass. The altitude guarantees good snow conditions, and the route, which climbs through a peaceful forest up to a ridge, has a quiet beauty all its own. This route follows Ragged Mountain Road from the top of McClure Pass on Highway 133 for five miles to the end of the road. The last section may involve breaking track in deep snow, so be prepared with gaiters and skis or backcountry snowshoes.

    Rio Grande Trail

    Forty-four miles of gently-sloping, paved trail that runs from Glenwood Springs to Aspen.

    The Rio Grande trail is perfect for families, road bikers, joggers, dog walking, and inline skating. Parts of the trail are groomed x-country ski trails in the winter. Best of all, the Rio Grande is a great way to connect mountain-bike trails, and find your way back to town or your car. Learn more »

    Spring Gulch

    Seven miles west of town you’ll find the Spring Gulch Nordic Trail System. Visiting and local Nordic enthusiasts find its 12 miles of tracked trails ideal. The trail system is maintained and operated by the Mount Sopris Nordic Council, a community-based non-profit organization. No fees are charged for the use of these trails, but membership in the Mount Sopris Nordic Council is encouraged. These tracks are for cross-country skiers only and no dogs are allowed. All levels of skiers can find trails in this system that will suit their abilities.

    Sunlight Mountain

    Sunlight ski area offers great hiking in the summer to the summit. Also during the summer months the expansive cross-country ski trail system transforms into a prime destination for mountain bikers. More than 16 miles of marked trails wander through a woodland landscape that features aspen groves, wildflower meadows, ponds, stream crossings and sometimes grazing cattle.
