The Narrows is a fun climbing area only 15 minutes south of Carbondale. The rock is a featured granite that offers a variety of routes, from 5.7 to 5.13. Most of the climbs are sport routes, but there are a few trad lines as well. To get there, drive south of town on Highway 133 to the Penny Hot Springs. Park here and then pick up the trail on the other side of the road that heads back toward town. A steep uphill hike will bring you to the various walls. There is some loose rock in spots and it’s best to bring a helmet. A few of the classic routes here include: Been Caught Stealing, 5.9 Located at the beginner-friendly School Yard area, this one is sure to please. It starts up a corner, goes up a face to a crack, and then finishes with some steep jugs. Bring some gear for the mid-section. Party at Your Mama’s House, 5.10c The Front Porch is maybe the best cliff here, and this might be the best 5.10. Continue climbing up the tallest part of the wall. The Future Ain’t What it Used to Be, 5.11 The Watchtower crag sits at the top of the hill and offers some excellent climbs. This route has two halves with distinct characteristics. The first is steep and techy, leading to an exciting mantle. From here, follow huge holds up the slightly overhanging wall to the top. Red Faction, 5.13a If you climb the grade, this route is not to be missed. Sitting in the Notch, a narrow slot-canyon-like area, it ascends a beautiful water-polished wall on excellent stone.
