Sunlight Mountain

Sunlight ski area offers great hiking and biking in the summer to the summit and an expansive cross-country ski trail system in the winter. More than 16 miles of marked trails wander through a woodland landscape that features aspen groves, wildflower meadows, ponds, stream crossings and sometimes grazing cattle. Don’t be alarmed, just give them a holler and they’ll kindly share the trail.

Sunlight Mountain Resort offers 29 kilometers of groomed cross country and snowshoe trails. Beginning, intermediate and advanced trails wind their way through a gorgeous high valley called Babbish Gulch, flanked by Sunlight Mountain and the 10,300 foot Williams Peak. All trails start at Old Four Mile Road near the Sunlight stables. Be ready for a steady climb as you begin your tour but don’t give in. Soon the trail finds its balance and delivers you through thick Aspen groves that give way Sunlight’s lower backcountry log cabin in Sunshine Meadow. Built in the 1800s, the cabin is a step back in time and a perfect end destination for nearly all abilities.

Those looking to go further can enjoy a winding trail along a small mountain stream on Babbish Gulch Trail or take their tour through the woods on Williams Peak Trail. Continue to the Compass Peak Trail to reach the top of Sunlight ski area. All trails lead right back to Sunlight’s base area where warm food and refreshing beverages are available to cap off your adventure.

Cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals are available at the Sunlight Mountain Ski and Bike Shop downtown at 309 9th St. and also on the mountain. There is no charge for trail use. Trail maps are available in the Guest Service Office. If you have any questions, please call us at 970-945-7491.
