Independence Pass, a stunning high-mountain pass crossing the Continental Divide, offers breathtaking scenery and a thrilling driving experience. This iconic route, with its dramatic switchbacks and panoramic views, connects Aspen and Leadville, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring nearby attractions like the Independence Ghost Town and the Grottos Ice Caves.
Because of the heavy snowfall at its elevation, Independence Pass is closed in the winter. Independence Pass is a challenging road with steep grades, narrow lanes, and numerous curves. While generally safe, drivers must exercise extreme caution, adhere to the posted speed limit, and be aware of other vehicles. Please note that vehicles exceeding 35 feet in length, including commercial vehicles, RVs, and trailers, are prohibited.
