Touted as one of “The Top 10 Adventure Towns in the U.S.” by National Geographic Adventure Magazine, Carbondale is a great base camp for recreation enthusiasts. There is plenty to do including biking, kayaking, and world-class fly fishing. In winter, excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be found along any of the hiking trails, and downhill skiing is only a few miles away. Carbondale's very active Recreation Department puts on special events, runs seasonal sports programs and field trips for children and adults, maintains the town's trails, parks (including the North Face skatepark) and pool (located right downtown). Stop by to visit the friendly staff at Carbondale's Town Hall, 511 Colorado Avenue, call 970-704-4116, or click here for a look at the Town of Carbondale Recreation Brochure (this file may take 2 - 2.5 minutes to load with a high-speed connection). For more information about hiking, biking, and backpacking in the surrounding White River National Forest, be sure to visit the U.S. Forest Service office at 620 Main Street. For additional listings, please see . . . It's 4 a.m. and cars slowly start to show up. One got stuck in the icy ruts on the road on the way in, but those with enough clearance have been there for a while. |
